Finale

Last night, for the first time, we had zero wind. None. We sailed a total of about one mile all night. When we woke up this morning, the ocean was flat and smooth, like a lake, so we ate breakfast and went for a swim. Of course, it was extremely hot without a breeze, so we had popsicles for a mid-morning snack. Over the course of the day, the wind increased, and now it's blowing pretty strongly. We're about 75 miles from the marina in Papeete, so we're feeling reasonably confident that Nora and I will make our flight out tomorrow night. Jason and Grace will stick around a little longer to get the boat bedded down until we can come back for a visit.

Assuming we make it to the marina tomorrow as planned, we'll have been on the water for 23 days. We realized about midway through this journey that, even though the trip from Seattle to Honolulu took longer overall, this is the longest unbroken ocean traveling we've done, because we stopped in California midway through that trip to wait out a hurricane. And we've survived, and we still (mostly) like each other.

For dinner tonight, we cleaned out the refrigerator. We're all looking forward to a dinner on land tomorrow, with no cooking and no cleanup required.
